Why Avoid A Cheap Coffee Maker

I remember our first coffee maker. We bought it at Bed, Bath, & Beyond on one of their $20 sales. It didn’t last long.

The same thing happened when we moved to Spain and started to stock our new apartment. I looked on Amazon for the best cheap coffee machine I could find, one where I at least recognized the manufacturer. Guess how long that one lasted?

We drink a lot of coffee. At least in the morning and sometimes in the afternoon as well. And, we want to drink a good cup of coffee. That cheap coffee maker we bought for our apartment just didn’t cut it. When a spring fell from the top of the machine and landed in the carafe, we knew it was time to upgrade.

That said, I wasn’t ready to drop a few hundred dollars on a luxury coffee maker.  If you don’t have the budget, there’s really no reason to spend much more than $100 for a quality cup of brew.

The important thing is to not cheap out. There is a happy medium, where coffee drinkers can purchase a quality machine that produces a consistently good cup of coffee. I hope this post helps.

What Features To Look For In A Coffee Machine Under $100

There are loads of automatic drip coffee makers on the market with loads of different features. They are sold for a range of prices. How is a coffee drinker supposed to know which one is best for them? Here we include reviews of some of our favorite coffee machines that sell between $50 and $100.

Before these reviews, though, I want to share a list of the most common features you see on most coffee makers. Some of these will make you think “I definitely need this feature” and some will make you think “I can do without these features” and that is how you narrow down which coffee maker is right for your home.

You might be surprised that a lot of the best coffee machines under $100 actually contain most, if not all, of these features.

Number Of Cups Brewed

If you are a single person, you might only need a single cup brewer or one that does small-batch brewing. A small batch is considered one to four cups.

If you are shopping for a large family or entertaining regularly, then you would want more cups. Most of our recommended coffee machines brew around 10-12 cups. Many of them offer a small batch function, though, giving you the best of both worlds.

If I were purchasing a coffee maker for an office, I might do a single-cup brewer. Otherwise, I think going for something larger is better. It gives you options and allows you to grow.

I quickly grew out of that cheap coffee maker we bought in Spain, which only made four cups. Those were European cup sizes too. This meant we each had a small cup of coffee, with no opportunity for a top-up or refill. Right now, we have a 10-cup coffee machine for two people, although we rarely fill the entire pot to the top.

Types Of Carafes

There are two main types of coffee carafes, or pots, in most coffee makers. Here are your primary options.

Glass Carafe

Traditionally, all coffee makers came with a glass carafe. A glass pot can be easier to keep clean. You know how much coffee is left in the pot too. The downside is that any coffee left in the pot doesn’t stay warm forever, the coffee can burn, and the glass can break.

Even on a warmer, after a while, the coffee starts to cool a bit and it will lose its freshness. A positive is that normally these coffee makers are less expensive.

Thermal Carafe

The other option is a thermal carafe, normally a stainless steel one. These carafes use thermos technology to keep the coffee hot for longer. It also keeps the coffee fresher over time. Most don’t even need to be kept on the coffee maker to stay warm.

This means you can place the carafe on the kitchen table for serving. The downsides here are that a carafe can be a little more difficult to clean and you can’t always tell how much coffee is left inside.

Coffee makers with a thermal carafe also tend to be a little more expensive. Our options are evenly split between glass and thermal carafes.

Style And Size

I can’t pretend the style doesn’t matter. A coffee maker at this price is probably one you will use daily or almost every day. That means you will be looking at it a lot. It will be sitting on your counter.

Most of our recommended coffee makers are either black or stainless steel and black. We chose these because they tend to work with almost every kitchen.

Size also matters. Cheaper coffee makers tend to be smaller. More expensive coffee makers tend to take up counter space. The good news is that the best coffee makers under $100 are all in the middle. They are like the Goldilocks of coffee machines.

The most important thing is to determine how much space you have and work with. Break out a measuring tape. Don’t forget to measure the height of your cabinet as well. Make sure to leave room to open the top of the machine and add water or be prepared to pull it away from the wall for each use.

Filters

There are a few different filter options. Traditionally, coffee machines needed paper filters. This means you are constantly buying new filters, but it does make cleanup easier. Now, many coffee machines have built-in filters, which normally leads to better-tasting coffee.

Some coffee machines include built-in water filters as well, which reduces the chemicals and impurities of the water used. This is pretty handy as we normally run water through a Britta filter before making our coffee.

Other Features To Look For

Although these features won’t affect the quality of the coffee brewed, many of them will affect your overall coffee-drinking experience.

Auto-Shut Off: This ensures that you don’t walk out of the house thinking “did I turn the coffee maker off?” The coffee machine will shut off automatically, normally after two hours.

Timer: This feature allows you to set a time for the coffee to start brewing, i.e. when your morning alarm is set. This saves morning prep time. It also means you are not trying to make coffee when groggy.

Pause Brew: This is a great feature, which allows the drinker to remove the carafe before brewing is complete to pour a cup. We’ve all been there, desperate for a cup first thing in the morning.

FAQs – HOW TO FIND THE BEST AFFORDABLE COFFEE MAKERS

What should you look for when buying a coffee maker for the home?

The most important thing is to consider the brand, the price-to-quality ratio, and the size of the coffee maker you need for your home.

Can I just buy the cheapest coffee maker I can find?

Learn from our mistakes. Invest just a little more, look for a quality coffee maker brand and make the investment. Otherwise, you will find yourself replacing your coffee maker more quickly than planned.

Do I need a luxury coffee maker?

If you want something higher-end, go for it. But, there are plenty of affordable coffee makers for less than $100 that can definitely do the trick.

How do I choose a coffee maker?

Like any purchase, looking at your budget is most important. Identifying the top brands through reviews is also important. Finally understanding the features that are important to you will help in deciding on which coffee maker is right for you.

Is it worth buying a coffee pod machine?

There are many advantages to a coffee pod machine. At the top of that list is speed. Coffee pod machines make coffee very quickly and very easily. However, for the most part, they are making a short coffee drink like an espresso. If you like a big hot cup of coffee, a coffee pod machine isn’t the right choice. So if you want speed and ease, then yes, a coffee machine is worth it.
