You are paying slightly more than you would at a bare-bones plastic-stool market stall, but significantly less than the restaurants directly on Ban Tai Beach. Where is Nam Restaurants on Koh Samui?
On Soi Ban Tai, in the Ban Tai area of Koh Samui’s north coast, between Mae Nam and Bophut. Walk up from the ring road for roughly five minutes and it is on your right, opposite La Via Italian Restaurant. Ban Tai Beach is a short walk in the other direction, another five minutes north to the beach.
There is parking in the alley on the side of Nam, but also at the boutique across the street.

Two things worth knowing from ordering across several visits. The crispy pork dishes are the reason to come — moo krob here is properly crisp rather than reheated, and it holds up in both the kale version and the chili version. And the som tum at 60 THB is one of the better value plates on this stretch of coast.
The moo krob prik kua arrived with garlic and red, green and yellow peppers rather than the plain salt-and-chili treatment the name suggests. Worth knowing before you order it expecting one thing and getting another.
We’ve also heard great things about their Thai desserts, including their mango sticky rice. But, we never have room after all of the pork!
How Much Does Dinner Cost at Nam Restaurants?
Three dishes and two large beers for two people came to 780 THB, just under $24 USD. A single main with rice runs 120 to 190 THB. A noodle soup is 120 THB. Beer is 120 THB for a large bottle. Without alcohol, and one dish with rice can be had for about $5 USD.
For comparison, the beachfront restaurants a few minutes away on Ban Tai charge noticeably more for equivalent dishes, and a local shophouse or street stall would charge less. Nam sits in the middle tier, which on Koh Samui’s north coast is where a lot of the better eating happens.
Their Thai drink prices are also competitive. Beers cost a little less than on the beachfront. And, there cocktails are 159 Thai baht, less than on the beach. That said, their cocktail menu is more limited.
How Does the Chili Scale Work at Nam Restaurants?
The menu uses an unofficial number-based chili scale rather. Two chilis is a comfortable medium — hot, but manageable for most visitors. Four chilis is authentically Thai spicy and is a genuinely different experience. One chili is a little spicy. You can also order dishes not spicy. There are a lot of Thai spices used very well on their menu. It’s just the chili level that requires an explanation!
Ordering by the number is far more reliable than asking for “medium” or “not too spicy,” which gets interpreted differently depending on who is taking the order.
Do You Eat Thai Food With Chopsticks?
Not usually. Most Thai meals are eaten with a fork and a spoon. The spoon goes in your dominant hand and does the eating; the fork is used to push food onto it. Chopsticks come out for noodle dishes, particularly soups like guay teow, but not for rice-based meals.
You will not be corrected if you ask for chopsticks. But the fork and spoon is what everyone around you will be using.
Is Nam Restaurants a Tourist Restaurant?
Yes, but not a beachfront one. Nam is popular with tourists and expats, and the menu is in English with photographs. What it is not is a beach club or a resort dining room — it is a casual, covered, open-sided restaurant on a residential street, and the pricing reflects that.
That distinction matters more than the tourist-versus-local framing usually does on Samui. The three tiers on this coast are street food and shophouses at the most local, restaurants set back from the sand in the middle, and beachfront dining at the top. Nam is squarely in the middle, and the middle is where the value is.
What is The Vibe at Nam Restaurants?
Casual and quiet, with some street noise from the soi — motorbikes and the occasional car. It is covered and open-sided, with bamboo throughout. Service is quick and friendly.
It is cash only for tourists, although Thais can pay with a QR code.
Can You Take Leftovers Home From Nam Restaurants?
Yes, and it is worth doing. Portions on the crispy pork dishes are generous enough that two of them plus a salad defeated us. Taking the pork home and reheating it with a fried egg the next day is a genuinely good lunch.
